Execs at Brown Shoe Co.’s Famous Footwear chain celebrated the opening of a new West Coast distribution center on Thursday that will provide faster deliveries to stores and a fresher product assortment to consumers.
The new 350,000-sq.-ft. facility, located in Tejon, Calif., will service about one-third of the chain’s store base, or 300 stores. “We will no longer have to take trucks and drive them to the Midwest and then back to the West Coast,” Brown Chairman and CEO Ron Fromm told Footwear News, adding that product could now arrive at stores up to two weeks sooner than before. “Where this really is important is in our ability to replenish.”
Fromm said in many cases stores could be restocked the very next day. “[Store managers] can now spend more of their time servicing the customer and less time working in the stockroom,” he said.
The new facility will also offer up significant efficiencies and cost savings at the company. While Fromm didn’t break out the specific savings the new center will provide, he said it would contribute to an estimated $33 million in savings this year as part of a larger cost-reduction plan.
