Late last month U.K.-based shoe chain Dune awarded a cash prize of about $15,750 to Scottish artist Jane Forbes in the “Shoe Is Art” competition.
The contest, which launched in September, set out to find the most exciting and original painting, photograph or sculpture of shoes. Forbes entered with “Ad Infinitum,” composed of 66 12-by-12-inch oil-on-canvas paintings of the same pair of brown shoes.
“Each day I paint them without looking at the previously completed paintings,” she said, adding that her inspiration came from Vincent Van Gogh’s “Een paar Schoenen.”
Forbes’ work will be displayed in Dune’s flagship store in Covent Garden, London, throughout this month.
