Wrapping easy, breezy basics in a California Dreamin’ theme, Tommy Hilfiger put forth an impressively complete collection Thursday evening, offering a staple (or three) for nearly every wardrobe. Hilfiger refined the boardwalk-inspired looks with lightweight cotton twill and jersey, showing pretty, strapless dresses in dusty rose and pale, pale green. In silk chiffon, these conveyed a slinky, boudoir feel. The shorts were single pleated and rolled up; coats, while tailored, had a looser, relaxed silhouette, as with a chic wide-collar white cotton trench. The whiffs of nostalgia were balanced with a few snappier pieces, including a zigzag-printed navy and white wool minidress and a za-za-zoom fire engine red silk jersey gown draped around the back. And working in details such as gold metallic trim and major buckles, Hilfiger moved forward with his Americana trends — going West, it turns out, suits him.

In addition to wholesome Americana, the men’s wear had a pleasant French-nautical streak, driven home by a striped Breton sweater. Suits were fitted and strong shouldered, especially the double-breasted versions. The choppy sampling of men’s wear didn’t convey any intention other than the selling of fresh, attractive clothes. And who would dare object to that?
