From the models’ plaited top knots to the vivid color palette of pinks, burnt oranges and sky blues, Paul Smith’s boy-meets-girl collection put an African spin on the designer’s very British silhouettes. Models wore mannish suiting in sun-drenched color combinations, such as a pink trouser suit, orange brogues and an orange bowler hat, or red silk cropped trousers paired with a country gent’s check jacket and a striped tie knotted at the neck in a bow. Smith also riffed on the continent’s vibrant costumes by wrapping swathes of red and green check fabric around the waist of a yellow sundress, or by tying a scarf painted with blues, greens and yellows over a sweater as a bikini top. And, with the designer’s assured touch, this salable collection would be at home on either side of the equator.
