Not willing to limit herself to just one exotic locale, Catherine Malandrino found inspiration in four far-flung lands this season: the Sudan, the Sahara, Peru and Polynesia.  “It’s about a message of warmth and sharing,” she said. But, perhaps more to the point, the various destinations proved a smart strategy in anchoring the season’s motifs. Take, for instance, one of spring’s most prominent trends: draping. Malandrino’s turban-clad Saharan babes sported gentle tunics and nicely draped and twisted frocks. Her color story, meanwhile, shone with the influences of Peruvian and Polynesian tribes — the former in rich terra-cotta tops and dresses, the latter in purple and pink fringed Ts and dégradé skirts. As for the designer’s Sudanese girls, they struck the edgiest chord of all — black leather jackets with alluring cutouts; two-tone tweed vests.
