The usually prim and proper Som girl let her hair down for spring, sporting long and loose shapes and hiked-up hems, which suggested the designer is casting a net beyond his uptown fan base. Som had a bit of a rough summer, with reports that he was leaving his post at Bill Blass followed by assurances he would stay, so perhaps this collection was a way to show his versatility. And it worked: There were beachy sundresses in azure silk seersucker, rompers and slim skirts with ruched, peekaboo slits up the backs. This was a jaunty lineup, with flowing sleeves and billowy, wide-legged trousers. Som loyalists needn’t worry, though — he tossed in a few jewel-toned, constructed pieces, such as a bright red sheath with beading along the bodice that was red-carpet worthy.
