Blending simplicity and complexity, Ann Demeulemeester offered one of her best collections in recent seasons. It all started easily enough: gathered T-shirt dresses, cinched black jackets worn over billowing white shirts and striped pants. This was familiar territory for the Belgian designer, but looked cleaned-up and fresh. From there, the clothes grew intricately beautiful with layered and draped dresses fit for a modern Greek goddess and airy saffron and pink silk numbers. Judging by the latter, Demeulemeester, who is known for her rock aesthetic, has no problem with a little glamour. Case in point: the ethnic-inspired embroidered dresses and the top of fringed rhinestones. The designer’s recent foray into fine jewelry has obviously opened her eyes to new decorative possibilities. That’s good news for Demeulemeester’s fans.
