Hats and head wraps abounded at Marc Jacobs Monday night, so hairstylist Guido Palau said it was his job just to “complement this sort of fashion idea.” The models represented “characters [Jacobs] has created,” Palau said, adding, “Sometimes when you’re doing a fashion show, it’s not about the hair, it’s about accessorizing and adding to the character.”

Palau chose to do a textured braid under the hats and used a heat-activated texture spray from Redken called Fabricate. He pulled some pieces of hair out of the braids to create flyaways for a bit of a messy look.

“The inspiration was the energy of Jacobs’ design and his vision of a woman,” Palau remarked.

Meanwhile, makeup artist Dick Page said he drew inspiration “straight from a very faded, blue, black-and-white photograph of a woman with no eyebrows, very shiny eyelids, a superthin lash line, black mascara [and] no lips that you could tell. It could be the Seventies, it could be the Thirties — you really couldn’t tell,” he said of the picture.

To recreate the image, Page applied to the eyelids a gloss mixed with skin cream, pearlized powder and a gold hue to “amp up the shine.” The lips got a touch of a rosy mauve shade for a “very neutral” look, “almost like a mannequin,” noted Page, who was working for Shiseido.
