The military has long been a rich source of inspiration for designers and it proved so again as Donatella Versace and men’s wear design consultant Alexandre Plokhov pitched camp with the Foreign Legion in North Africa. Dip-dyed djellabas drifted freely from underneath tailored safari suits, while trousers unfastened at the ankles with buttons to show off canvas desert boots. Shirts were voluminous and worn open over T-shirts with crocodile and abstract prints, the breezy layers tucked into full-legged, single-pleat pants. The color palette was dominated by sandy, natural tones, evoking a hazy desert setting. While the collection bordered on being too literal at times – uniform-like tassel braiding on evening jackets or down pant legs for example - it wasn't too regimented. Dressed more for a getaway than a scuffle, the Versace man is clearly a lover, not a fighter, and his summer wardrobe will certainly command attention.
