Giorgio Armani looked to the past and the future for spring under the banner of Classicism 2010. He opened in a classic stride with impeccably tailored gray suits – some with subtle pinstripes – proving that business dressing still has a place on the runway. From there he moved between tailoring and sportswear with consummate ease. Jackets came slightly shorter in washed cotton with natural shoulders while trousers were slimmer for a more svelte silhouette. The lineup was rich with natural fabrics, from ultra light wools and textured linens to a splash of denim. Flights of eccentricity came first by way of color – flashes of electric blues, cobalt and coral – then out strolled a pair of male bloomers and some cargo shorts in jersey and velvet. After more than 30 years of crafting timeless men’s clothes, Armani is entitled to a little experimentation. The overreaching theme was one of self confidence and relaxed chic underlined by the designer himself, who – while visibly thinner as he recovers from hepatitis - took his bow wearing his signature black T-shirt with “1A” in white letters on the front.
