Things are currently on hold at Just Cavalli, since Ittierre SpA, the company that produces the line, recently filed for bankruptcy protection. That prompted Roberto Cavalli to cancel his Thursday show in favor of a presentation. As to whether his secondary line would go into production, Cavalli only had this to say: “I hope with all my heart.” Here’s to that, because this was one of the more focused showings of his Just Cavalli edgy vamp. (Perhaps with the oh-so-tight 20-look lineup there was less chance of wandering off course.) For fall, the designer worked a major punk vibe, angsty and rebellious to the core. In other words: Hello, streetwise urbanite and goodbye animal-print beach babe. In fact, Cavalli kept his feral-loving self at bay, and his prints took an arty direction with Abstract Expressionist paint splatters. There was plenty of distressed and shredded denim, not to mention studs and safety-pin embellishments galore on dresses and vests. Moto jackets? Those, too, quilted and cut in myriad ways. While Cavalli did introduce some more romantic moments, as in the ruffled blouses, they came with tough counterpoints. To wit, his sheer one-shouldered dress with a flounced hem featured opaque armorlike patches throughout.
