Remember late Seventies New York, when a recession hit the city and the Ladies who Lunch hit Studio 54? Chris Benz’s bright-young-things fan base may not, but the designer conjured up that era’s louche glamour for fall and added a modern twist: Solid colors such as lemon yellow, seaglass green, bright blues and oranges were splashed on silk suits and evening gowns. The primary palette also turned up in dresses and tops with charming details, as in a sweet one-shouldered minidress and sequined cowlneck sweater. Benz said he wanted his prints to look “as if you dropped a napkin in the street and picked it up, splashed with color.” Indeed, a lovely photographic pattern with murky tones, shot through with orange, was worked into blouses and dresses, rounding out a surprisingly sophisticated showing.
