There were as many as 65 models backstage hours before the Marc Jacobs fashion show Monday night and one thing was certain — each had a different hair look.

"That's why I'm in panic mode," said Guido Palau, the Redken hairstylist who, with a ton of hair spray and gel, created Eighties punk rock dos, frizzed out Mohawks, twisted updos, teased Afros, slicked-backed crops and towering beehives.

On the makeup side, it had been as many as 10 years since François Nars, creator of Nars Cosmetics, did a fashion show — until now. That's where another certainty came in — each model had a different makeup look. "I came back for Marc," said Nars. "It's fun to work with him."

Color looks ran from dark smoky eyes to wild, exaggerated cat eyes, with eye shadow brushed from the outer corner of the eye, tapering into a point out across the temple and to the hairline. Think Elizabeth Taylor in her most Cleopatra-esque moment.

Around some of the strong eyes were vivid colors like fuchsia, which were freely brushed on in moments of controlled chaos. There were perfect red lips on powder white faces and fairy-dust-like highlights atop some cheeks. "The smoky, strong eye is one of my favorite looks," Nars said. "It's Eighties inspired — [by] Yves Saint Laurent, Stephen Sprouse. "We're doing quite an eclectic look," he said. "Marc wanted to bring out the character and individuality of each girl. It's like a New York night scene. There's a strong edge to each of them — they're fun, wild and extreme looks. It's really combining many, many colors. It's very Deborah Harry."

Nars said he mixed in "every" color, including "greens, cobalt blues and black," tailoring the makeup look for each model depending on what hair and outfit she wore.

The binding concept among all the looks was that the girls would be ready to go clubbing after the show. And there was no doubt some of them would.
