Vera Wang

Vera Wang is the first major designer to pull up stakes at the tents in Bryant Park this season.

Wishing to convey a more intimate mood, the designer will stage her Feb. 19 show in her new Mercer Street store. It is tentatively planned for 9 a.m., which frees up her usual 10 a.m. slot.

“It seems relevant today. I don’t want to seem irrelevant or unaware of what’s going on in the rest of the world — not just the fashion world,” Wang said Tuesday. “I finally made the decision last night based on many, many things. The intimacy of a smaller show feels much more appropriate for these times. I say that as a business owner, as a designer and as a person.”

Wang is hopeful the intricacy of the collection, which has yet to be designed, will lend itself to tighter quarters. This decision to scale back also allows her to be more focused about the scope and the details, as well as how attendees will view her creations when they are within reach.

The designer also said she did not decide on the new format solely for financial reasons. “Once you go off-site, you don’t get any of the benefits that are in tents. New York Fashion Week is the best deal you can get financially,” she said. “But by the same token, showing in the tents calls for 25 girls, and hair and makeup. It’s an incredible production.”

Presenting a collection in the boutique will be no small feat — though architect Michael Gabellini did map it out with multimedia presentations in mind. Wang expects to use 14 or 15 models, and the guest list will range from 100 to 150. A second show is being considered. “This is not going to be a showroom presentation,” she said, but declined to elaborate about what specifically is planned.
