The New Year brings another flock of resolution-happy patrons to the gym. During the holidays, activewear retailers reported shoppers were purchasing layering outerwear, like technical jackets and vests. Other activewear buys are likely to be the latest looks for yoga and spin classes. Here, the season's bestsellers.

Store: Nike

Item: Nike + iPod Sport Kit (which lets runners listen to music while tracking their progress via an iPod Nano).

Price: $19

Why: "Nike + has been a driver for one of our biggest categories: running," said a Nike spokeswoman. "At the point of our one-year anniversary in July more than 22 million miles had been logged, runners had competed in over 110,000 challenges and burned almost 1 billion calories. In a recent survey of nikeplus.com members, 97 percent said they would recommend Nike + iPod to a friend."

Store: Fila

Item: The "wellness" pant, capri and tank.

Price: $65 (pant), $56 (capri), $45 (tank).

Why: "Softer than standard nylon, Supplex Lycra won't wrinkle, shrink or fade and holds its shape and color," said a Fila spokeswoman. "The breathable fabric also is odor-, wind-and water-resistant. Supplex Lycra will move and stretch with the body, thus the material story creates a sense of wellness, of comfort, which is essential in yoga practice."

Store: Lucy

Item: Half-zip workout top.

Price: $68

Why: "Our half-zips are great layering pieces under outerwear or over camis," said a Lucy spokeswoman. "The half-zip allows for ventilation control and is versatile enough to wear from studio to street."

Store: Lululemon

Item: Shape-up jacket.

Price: $89

Why: "The shape-up jacket is a great multifunctional piece," said a Lululemon spokeswoman." With such a wide range of colors and a full range of sizes, it is perfect for any athletic enthusiast."

Store: New Balance

Item: Cocona run jacket.

Price: $70

Why: "I believe people bought it as a gift for others because we saw a bump in sales in November and December," said Kasia Matosek, product manager for New Balance running apparel. "It's versatile for running or just for wearing to get a coffee. I think that because it is made with the unique cocona fabrication, that it is environmentally friendly, and the fact that the colors are strong for the holiday season made it enticing to the consumer."

Store: Adidas

Item: Megabounce+ running shoe.

Price: $110

Why: It's "purchased mainly as a gift," according to a spokeswoman for Adidas. "The new Megabounce+ provides everlasting cushioning and unstoppable durability while providing constant color updates."

Store: Prana

Item: Callie T.

Price: $40

Why: "Tops like the Callie T that are a longer length, have strong graphics, appliqués and screen prints and feature unique details...the Callie T's sheer-as-stocking burnout sleeves are popular for us this season," said a Prana spokesman.

Store: Puma

Item: Duffle sweat jacket in black or star white.

Price: $80

Why: "We believe that women are buying the duffle jacket for themselves and as gifts," said a spokeswoman for Puma. "In addition to this piece being comfortable, stylish and great looking, the jacket was also featured as part of our holiday campaign and promoted in editorial and promotional marketing pieces."

Store: Reebok

Item: Christie jumpsuit from the Scarlett [hearts] Rbk collection.

Price: $140

Why: "The consumer public is excited about celebrity-endorsed products," said a spokesman from Reebok. "The Scarlett Johansson collection is both fashionable and wearable, making it a definite draw for women of all ages."
