Zac Posen may be taking his show on the road — to Paris. The designer told a visitor to his showroom Tuesday that he will show his spring 2011 ready-to-wear collection in Paris where, he said, “they understand my clothes.” Posen cited as an additional reason for the move his inability to secure his preferred time slot during New York Fashion Week.
When called today for details, Posen backtracked. He said nothing had been decided, but that “doing a fashion show in New York with today’s climate, is difficult.” He added that in Europe, “my clothes are respected.” Meaning that such is not the case in New York? “It’s not just about respect,” Posen said. “It’s about the work the work I do, and who wears the clothes.” The designer also noted that he now has 14 collections a year to deal with, due to his Target deal, his Z Spoke line at Saks Fifth Avenue and his signature line. To help pay the bills, Posen just helped design the model apartment’s furniture and custom fabrics at architect Morris Adjimi’s new flatiron condo building called 16W21.
“This was the first time I have done something like this. I loved doing it,” Posen said, “It was also good income – for the company.”
Free publicity is also part of the package – so much so that other designers have been known to design residential spaces pro bono for that reason alone.
Posen’s handiwork is flagged in the promotional material for the new digs at 16 West 21st Street, which should be up-and-running in the next month or two.
