WORK IN PROGRESS: On Wednesday, Milan’s municipality presented the first results of the restoration works in the city’s prestigious Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Aimed at bringing the shopping arcade to its original look, the restoration, which is expected to be completed by April 2015, is entirely financed by fashion companies Prada and Versace. They are investing more than 3 million euros, or $4.1 million at current exchange rates.
In the first 15 days of works, which are supervised by the superintendence to the historic and architectural patrimony, the group of restorers, architects and engineers handling the project completed the restoration of two sides of the Galleria’s central octagon — one is occupied by a Louis Vuitton store and the other will host a new Versace flagship — along with three spans in the part of the arcade leading to Piazza Scala. In particular, the restorers, who are working on a special mobile scaffolding, which doesn’t hamper the circulation of people in the arcade, cleaned the stone surfaces and the plaster decorations, while the walls have been brought to their original white cream color.
While Versace will finance the first part of the works, Prada will take care of the second session, starting in September.
