WORK BEGINS: After unveiling the project in December, restoration works on Milan’s storied Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II kicked off Monday. Overseen by architects Daniela Fiocchi and Roberto Baciocchi, the activities for the cleaning and conservation of the prestigious shopping arcade will be financed by Versace, Prada and Feltrinelli. Incidentally, Baciocchi has worked on the design of several Prada stores around the world.

Versace, which is set to open a 2,775-square-foot flagship in the Galleria by this summer, will cover 50 percent of the Galleria’s restoration costs, which are expected to total 3 million euros, or $4.1 million at current exchange. The restoration of the shopping arcade is expected to be completed by April 2015, just in time for Expo 2015, opening in Milan on May 1 next year.
