Vera Wang Hosts Presentation of David's Bridal Line

WHITE WEDDING: The holidays are prime time for wedding proposals, but Vera Wang got a jump on the season Tuesday by hosting an informal presentation of her White by Vera Wang collection. Before editors sat down to high tea at Thomas Keller’s Per Se restaurant in New York, Robert Huth, president of David’s Bridal, mentioned that next year the 300-unit chain will open two stores in the U.K.

While a few wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses were displayed on the outskirts of the private dining room, the designer really was the main event. Wang, who was joined by her company’s president, Mario Grauso, chatted with guests about all sorts of subjects. Entertaining as ever, she let slide her interest in opening a Bal Harbour, Fla., store and how she wound up on jury duty with Uma Thurman, Ed Burns, Dick Cavett and a roomful of other familiar faces. Truth be told, she said her civic duty extends to helping younger designers. Wang also made no bones about the fact that she buys and wears clothes from competitors (sometimes too much so, Grauso said good-naturedly.)

Having decided to nix her plan to fly to London for the Olympics, Wang, a sports fan, said she decided she will see more events via TiVo. But the designer has already locked up her gold-medal moment. Her daughter Josephine will be off to Harvard next month and the Chapin graduate insisted that her parents not phone in any favors to try to help her make the cut. “That has been the best thing that has happened to me this summer,” Wang said. “I’m not proud of her — I am proud for her.”

Even though The Crimson was not her daughter’s first Ivy League choice, the designer assured her, “It’s probably a better brand.”
