WHEN IN ROME: The Fendi-financed restoration of Rome’s Trevi Fountain gets under way Thursday. As part of the “Fendi for Fountains” project, the Rome-based fashion house has donated 2.18 million euros, or almost $3 million at current exchange, to restore the famous fountain, along with another 320,000 euros, or $436,128, to finance the restoration of the Four Fountains, a group located between Via delle Quattro Fontane and Via del Quirinale.
Work on the Four Fountains is expected to be completed by March, and the restoration of the Trevi Fountain will end in fall 2015. During the Trevi work, the site’s enclosures will be transparent and a bridge will be placed over the fountain’s tank to allow visitors to see the monument from a special point of view.
Fendi president and chief executive officer Pietro Beccari said, “The works won’t only bring back the Trevi Fountain to its former splendor, but will also give the chance to tourists to visit the fountain from a completely new perspective and from an incredible short distance. Rome and its fountains gave a lot to Fendi over the years and we are honored to give back one of Rome’s symbols to people.”
