DAGWORTHY TO RETIRE: Wendy Dagworthy, the professor at London’s Royal College of Art who has taught and mentored designers including Stella McCartney, Hussein Chalayan and Erdem Moralioglu during her career at the RCA and London’s Central Saint Martins, is to retire from the RCA in July.
Dagworthy, who is professor, head of programs and dean of school at the RCA, joined the college in 1998 as course director and professor of fashion, before being named head of the RCA’s School of Fashion and Textiles in 2001. In that role, Dagworthy taught designers including Moralioglu, Holly Fulton, Katie Eary and Sophia Webster. She taught McCartney and Chalayan in her role as course director of fashion at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, where she served from 1989 through 1998. In 2011 Dagworthy was named an OBE, or officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the fashion industry, and in the same year was appointed dean of the RCA’s new School of Material, which incorporates the school’s various fashion and textile disciplines.
Dagworthy said: “The college is unique and I can truly say I have loved working with so many creative people — students and colleagues alike. My time here has been incredibly rewarding and I look forward now to the next phase of my life.” Dr. Paul Thompson, rector of the Royal College of Art added: “Wendy will be missed, not only by the legions of designers she has discovered, educated and mentored during her RCA career, but also by colleagues past and present.” A spokeswoman for the college said the RCA is currently searching for a replacement for Dagworthy’s role as the dean of the School of Material.
