HAUTE HAIR: Vanessa Seward and John Nollet have each concocted a collection of hair accessories to be sold at Paris’ Colette for the upcoming couture season, which runs July 6 to 11.
Seward’s line was created with Kérastase. She began the project by focusing on the L’Oréal-owned brand’s Couture Styling range that’s fronted by Kate Moss and has a high glamour quotient.
“Kérastase for me is all about gold; I am kind of a gold, metallic person — it comes back in my work a lot,” she said. “I like the idea, too, of chain links. I wanted [the accessories] to be very timeless, for it to be kind of jewelry that you would keep for a long time. And I didn’t want it to be girly.”
“There’s a headband which I call Chain Reaction for the song,” continued Seward. “I wanted a headband — but with big links.”
Boucle d’Or is a clip, while La Discrète is a clasp. The ornaments’ prices range from 100 euros to 240 euros, or $137 to $328 at current exchange.
“The idea for me is that it is high jewelry that you can wear with jeans and you can wear with a long dress for the red carpet,” she said.
For the project, Seward tapped costume jewelry manufacturer Edgard Hamon, with whom she worked while at Chanel and Azzaro.
“They are real luxury products,” said Seward.
So, too, are the one-of-a-kind, handmade headbands made of hair dreamed up by Nollet. He realized the need for speed in preparing for special events and that such accessories can help achieve different effects in a short time span.
“The inspiration for this collection is feathers — it can be hair that looks like feathers or feathers in the hair. It’s all about [their] lightness of movement,” he said.
Nollet worked with ateliers including embroiderer Lesage and feather house Lemarié. At his own atelier, the hair is colored to perfection. And altogether, each piece can take between two days to one week to make.
Colette will be selling about 20 of Nollet’s unique pieces, whose prices are upward of 400 euros, or $546.
He will personally be at Colette between July 7 and 12, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., for special orders — an additional service.
“My philosophy is that hair is the most important accessory ever,” said Nollet.
