New York City police and fire officials were called to the Hearst Tower Wednesday afternoon to rescue two maintenance workers dangling from scaffolding outside the building’s 44th floor. As of 7 p.m., sections of West 57th and West 58th Streets remained closed because the scaffolding had yet to be secured, according to a NYPD spokesman.
The emergency happened around 3 p.m., according to a security official at the Hearst Tower. With the Norman Foster building’s 44th floor closed, Harper’s Bazaar had to postpone Wednesday night’s party to celebrate the 14 American nominees for this year’s International Woolmark Prize. Guests were notified shortly before 5 p.m. that Glenda Bailey and Reed Krakoff would not be toasting Joseph Altuzarra, Bibhu Mohapatra, Ohne Titel, Timo Weiland and the others as planned. A new date has not yet been scheduled for the event.
A Harper’s Bazaar spokeswoman said, “The 44th floor has been closed for window repairs, and we are thankful for the efforts of both the NYFD and NYPD. It’s business as usual here.”
