ARTISTS’ COLONY: Turnbull & Asser is getting artsy. The luxury British furnishings maker is installing a gallery space on two empty floors above its flagship store at 50 E. 57th Street in New York. The site’s first show, which opens Thursday, will showcase English photographer Walter Hugo, who specializes in portraits employing early photographic techniques such as ambrotypes and tintypes. “I have a fondness for photography and I’ve always been a big believer that fashion and art are a good marriage,” said James Fayed, director of Turnbull & Asser, of dedicating 3,000 square feet of pricey Midtown real estate to the gallery, which has been dubbed The Sixth Floor. The space is on the sixth and fifth floors of the Turnbull & Asser-owned building. The retail store occupies floors one through three, company offices are on four, and a showroom for Bespoken, the men’s label run by James’ brothers, Liam and Sam Fayed, is on the seventh floor. To curate future shows, Turnbull & Asser has partnered with Carrie Scott Presents, a London agency that works to bring British artists to the U.S. “A lot of galleries that used to be on 57th Street have closed. I hope this gives us the opportunity to bring talent here that otherwise wouldn’t have this exposure,” said Fayed, whose family owns Turnbull & Asser.
