TONY KICKOFF: The Tony Award nominations were revealed Tuesday morning, and footwear appears to be playing a leading role.
Nominations for Best Costume Design of a Musical went to Gregg Barnes for “Kinky Boots,” William Ivey Long for “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” Rob Howell for “Matilda The Musical” and Dominique Lemieux for “Pippin.”
Vying for the award for Best Costume Design of a Play are Soutra Gilmour for “Cyrano de Bergerac,” Ann Roth for “The Nance,” Albert Wolsky for “The Heiress” and Catherine Zuber for “Golden Boy.”
The Cindy Lauper-scored “Kinky Boots” led with 13 Tony Award nominations, while the British import “Matilda The Musical” came in second place with 12 nominations. Those shows nominated for Best Musical are “Bring It On: The Musical,” “A Christmas Story, The Musical,” “Kinky Boots” and “Matilda The Musical.” The Best Play nominees are “The Assembled Parties,” “Lucky Guy,” “The Testament of Mary” and “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.”
The Tonys take place June 9 at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
