A handful of Tokyo designers, including Aguri Sagimori, Hidenobu Yasui and Everlasting Sprout, opted to do films rather than traditional runway shows this season. In some cases, the videos were placed on the designers' websites and in others they were presented to buyers and press at special events.

Designers' reasons for the change may vary, but for at least some, it does not signal a permanent departure from fashion shows. "I just selected video as a way of presentation for [spring-summer]...I always try to choose the best way to present a season's concept. I'm conscious that video is just video, it is just a way of expression. I think that fashion and cloth are much more real," says Keiichi Muramatsu, designer of Everlasting Sprout.
