THE ENDLESS CLOTHES AND JEWELRY OF LIZ TAYLOR: Designers and editors decided to start their Tuesday off bright and early at Christie’s for a breakfast and private pre-auction tour of “The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor” hosted by Endless.com’s chief executive officer Maria Renz and president Shelley Salomon. Most of the designers in attendance were from the world of accessories, such as Ivanka Trump; Carol Brodie; Pamela Love; Dana Lorenz of Fenton-Fallon, and Jesse Randall of Loeffler Randall, who, like most guests, were mainly focused on seeing the jewelry. On display in the enormous collection was the famous La Peregrina pearl necklace and the 33.19-carat Elizabeth Taylor diamond ring that, according to a spokesperson, was given to Taylor by Richard Burton as a “Tuesday” gift for no special occasion.
While Taylor’s diamonds may have been her trademark, her couture and ready-to-wear collection is nothing to balk at either. As curator Meredith Etherington-Smith said, “Finding the collection in a warehouse in Long Island City, Queens, was like unearthing Tutankhamun’s tomb,” and that Taylor was truly a collector of fashion in the days when stars bought their clothes noting, “This was the working wardrobe of a star.” The clothes span Taylor’s many sides, from her 60-year love of Dior to the ethnic caftans throughout the Sixties and Seventies to the congresswoman’s wife Chanel suits and on to the beaded Versace jackets. The auction opens Dec. 13 with a black-tie gala auctioning the jewelry and continues through Dec. 16 with different lots sold each day.
