THAKOON OUT WEST: Thakoon Panichgul visits Dallas regularly for trunk shows at Forty Five Ten, but last week he also helped create what was billed as “one of the largest pieces of abstract art in history.” Panichgul was a guest at Two by Two for AIDS and Art, the 13th annual dinner and contemporary art auction at the impressive Richard Meier-designed Rachofsky House. At the Thursday evening auction preview called First Look, artist Rob Pruitt erected a billboard-sized tarp near the outdoor bar and invited guests to blast it with paintball guns.

“It was really fun,” Panichgul said, noting he’d never shot any kind of gun before. “But I was trying to find a target to shoot.”

He certainly hit the target at Forty Five Ten, where sales of his resort and spring collections and diffusion label, Addition, totaled $120,000, according to store owner Brian Bolke. Ten percent of proceeds will benefit Two by Two, which Bolke has chaired in the past.

Two by Two patrons also included Kenneth Cole, Stanley Tucci, John Benjamin Hickey and Patti LaBelle, who sang a soulful “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

“There is nothing like this event anywhere,” said Cole, amfAR’s board chairman. “It’s so wonderful for [Howard and Cindy Rachofsky] to share their modest one-bedroom house with us.” Two by Two, the single largest fund-raiser both for amfAR and the Dallas Museum of Art, reaped a record $4.8 million Saturday and registered its first $1 million sale — a large linen canvas streaked with color by Mark Grotjahn.
