PEARL JAM: Japanese jewelry company Tasaki is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and marked the occasion with a “pearl and diamond jubilee” party Tuesday. The event, held in a large warehouse-like space in Tokyo’s eastern suburbs, featured several pearl-inspired interactive artworks, including a ball pit filled with shiny white plastic balls, a “pearl” screen constructed of ping pong balls on which guests’ photos were projected, and 180,000 pearls strung from the ceiling, creating a dome-like pearl room.
Tasaki’s creative director, Thakoon Panichgul, was in town to work on new designs and attend the event. While he’s been kept busy during his weeklong visit and hasn’t been able to see as much of the city as he’d like to, he said he has enjoyed exploring the Daikanyama neighborhood when he has a few minutes of free time. Since he joined forces with Tasaki in 2009, he said things have been going well for him and the brand.
“I think that there’s been a lot of great reception to the pieces, and there are a lot of things that are sort of iconic at this point, and it’s been exciting to have like a road map,” he said.
Aside from his work with Tasaki, Panichgul said he is concentrating on growing his own brand Thakoon, and that he is currently in the development stages of an expanded accessories offering.
