STYLE UPDATE: Dress for Success provides business attire to disadvantaged women trying to launch new careers. Every woman who visits the organization’s Manhattan boutique gets a new suit and a new or renewed sense of confidence. Now the Dress for Success boutique has gotten a makeover of its own. Bobbi Brown, a member of the Dress for Success board of directors, and Richard Baker, governor and chairman of the Hudson’s Bay Company, which operates Lord & Taylor, spearheaded the facelift. The renovated space is brighter and more luxurious than before. “No one was complaining,” Brown said of the boutique’s former state. “I’m a very visual person and it was driving me crazy.” Brown told Baker, a friend, about the organization and her desire to upgrade the boutique’s aesthetics. After touring the facility, “Richard said, ‘Okay. Done,’” Brown recalled.
Baker tapped Lord & Taylor’s in-house design team, which installed a new frosted glass door and track lighting. “We have a new shoe area,” said Joi Gordon, chief executive officer of Dress for Success. “We have striped walls and beautiful fabric in the dressing rooms. It’s the same transformation that we give our women. They designed a beautiful place for women who don’t feel beautiful on the outside. They get the tools they need to go out and help their families.”
The boutique is awaiting the arrival of a jewelry case for Lia Sophia jewelry, a reception desk and a Bobbi Brown makeup counter. “Part of the service of getting these women back in the workplace is making them feel like winners,” Baker said. “When you watch these women, they come in with their heads down and leave with their heads up.”
