PICCADILLY JEWEL: “Fortnum & Mason...You know the butcher, the baker, the candle stick maker, and now the jeweler,” said Stephen Webster at the launch of the London store’s jewelry room in London on Thursday. “One thing I’d like to ask is, can you please give it its own category and not just refer to it to non-food? I think it deserves more.” The store’s new jewelry room carries creations by designers including Lara Bohinc and Vivienne Westwood, as well as exclusive pieces especially designed for the store by Stephen Webster, Alex Monroe, and Alexis Bittar. It will also house the Rock Vault exhibition, a British Fashion Council initiative highlighting new jewelry design talent. “This is the first time we are taking it out of Somerset House and putting it in a commercial environment.” said Webster, who is Rock Vault’s curator. “This is the next generation of jewelry.” Located on the second level, the new jewelry department has the feel of an art gallery, with gold-edged glass display cases affixed on the walls, and rows of traditional table displays. The room is filled with ornate cut-glass chandeliers and bunches of white calla lilies and hydrangeas.
