A DUCHESS’ DIAMONDS: A selection of jewelry and precious objects that once belonged to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London on Dec. 12. More than half of the 30 items were part of the famous sale of Wallis Simpson’s jewelry in 1987, a year after her death.

The Duchess’ love of bold pieces in striking colors shines through in a coral, emerald and diamond choker that was made by Cartier in 1949 and is expected to fetch 40,000-60,000 pounds, or about $65,300-$97,900 at current exchange.

An amethyst, turquoise and diamond bracelet made by Cartier in 1954 is an example of the color combination the Duchess loved. It comes with a photograph of her wearing the bracelet and is valued at $32,000-$48,700.

Another highlight is a sapphire and diamond bracelet by Cartier, circa 1945. Designed as a series of oval links set with cushion-shaped sapphires in alternating light and dark shades of blue, it is valued at $211,000-$292,000.

Among the duke’s former items is a rectangular silver pocket frame with the engraving, “From Great Grandmama V.R.I. 24th May 1899,” and was a gift from Queen Victoria to the four-year-old Edward on her 80th birthday. It is expected to fetch 6,000-10,000 pounds, or $9,791-$16,318.
