ART FOR ALL: Driven by the vision of “Art for All,” the Sing for Hope pianos are back. Sponsored by Chobani Inc. and in collaboration with the City of New York, 88 pianos will grace public areas throughout the five boroughs as part of a public art installation designed to make music accessible to the community. On Thursday the organization had a launch celebration for this year’s collection of pianos. Among those who participated in customizing the pianos this year are designer John Varvatos and media executive Arianna Huffington.

The Varvatos-designed baby grand piano, featuring a steel-look finish with nailstuds, was inspired by the designer’s Bowery concept stores, according to Tor Caracappa, who heads up visuals for John Varvatos. The piano will be set up in front of Lincoln Center.

The Huffington Post upright piano will be located at Thomas Jefferson Park in East Harlem.

The pianos will be on public display from June 1-16, after which they will be donated to schools, hospitals and local groups. Designers in the prior years who customized the pianos include Diane Von Furstenberg and Isaac Mizrahi.

Camille Zamora, a soprano and co-founder of Sing for Hope, said the first public street pianos originated in England in 2005 when they were left outside because they couldn’t be carried into the flats.

The organization is in its sixth year, while the piano program is in its third year.
