SHALL WE DANCE?: One of the most anticipated and cutting-edge ballet productions at the Opéra de Paris this spring may also be one of the shortest. Premiering on May 2 and clocking in at under 17 minutes, “Boléro” features costumes designed by Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy’s couturier, with set design by his performance artist friend Marina Abramovic. Choreographed by Belgians Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet, the ballet is based on the famous music piece by Maurice Ravel, commissioned in the Twenties for Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein.
Details about Tisci’s costumes have yet to be released, but they are said to be heavily embroidered and true to his flamboyant style. “Boléro” is one of four short ballets on the program, also featuring choreography by Maurice Béjart, Vaslav Nijinski and Jerome Robbins.
