SECOND THAT EMOTION: “Yves loved music — a lot,” Pierre Bergé said Monday night in Paris at a commemorative concert to mark the fifth anniversary of the death of Yves Saint Laurent. The likes of Catherine Deneuve, Betty Catroux and Thadée Klossowski de Rola filed into an intimate amphitheater at the Opéra Bastille for the two-hour session, which was heavy on Richard Wagner.
It was also a chance to watch actor Guillaume Gallienne, who is to portray Bergé in the forthcoming Saint Laurent biopic directed by Jalil Lespert, get into the skin of the couture boss. He read a series of letters Bergé wrote following Saint Laurent’s death, including one which exalted his partner for elevating the shallow fashion world into the realm of art. Pierre Niney, who is to portray the frail couturier in the Jalil film, was also in the house.
Performers included violinist Renaud Capuçon, composer and pianist Jérôme Ducros, pianist François-Frédéric Guy and mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch, who shared a stage flanked by two larger-than-life 1969 portraits of Saint Laurent by Helmut Newton.
Earlier this month, Bergé hosted another memorial event, unveiling a plaque on the building on Rue Bablylone where the designer had lived out much of his adult life.
