LOOKING EAST: Satine’s third outpost in Los Angeles might be on the city’s Westside, but it is looking eastward. Opened on Jan. 13, the 600-square-foot Satine Kawaii on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice draws inspiration from Satine owner Jeannie Lee’s shopping experiences in Japan. “I find the shops to be very small and intimate, and there is always this element of surprise. Lifestyle is incorporated. You can find toothpaste next to Balenciaga boots,” she said. “This store is tightly modeled on boutiques I’ve seen in Tokyo. We will carry ready-to-wear from Japan, but, in addition to that, we are going to carry Japanese food items like green tea Kit Kats and rice crackers, and other little things I bring back from Japan.” Among the Japanese clothing lines sold in the store are Adeam, Mame and Toga. The store also stocks Opening Ceremony, Sophie Hume, Kenzo, Tom Binns, Alexander Wang, Laurence Dacade, Sophie Hulme, Valentino and Erdem. Lee, who originally set up shop in Venice with Satine’s second store a year-and-a-half ago, acknowledged the pressure to generate higher sales per square foot to be profitable is increasing on Abbot Kinney as national and international brands have taken notice of the street and heightened retail rents, but she said Satine been able to do healthy business on Abbot Kinney and expressed optimism about the prospects for the new store. “We really love being in Venice. We found that the neighborhood is a really good fit for us,” said Lee.
