Coach hosted a reception at Chelsea’s Danziger Gallery on Wednesday night for Scott Schuman’s latest book, “The Sartorialist: Closer,” and an exhibit of the same name. Schuman attracted plenty of his past subjects dolled up in their finest and more than a few hopeful-seeming souls, preened and primped and ready to be shot. A certain corner of the online fashion media cognoscenti also turned out, including Schuman’s companion, Garance Doré, Emily Weiss and Bryanboy.
“I actually like to keep a bit of distance between me and who I shoot, especially people I shoot a lot,” Schuman said of being surrounded by his subjects. “I don’t want to know them that well, because I want to see them with that kind of romantic distance. Like, do you know Caroline Issa? She’s beautiful, right? But she’s a good friend and I shoot her, but she’s not in the book because I think I know her so well whenever I take a shot of her, it doesn’t capture her playfulness. The more I get to know someone, the harder it is to shoot because I just know them too well. It’s actually a little bit weird to have them around because I kind of want to keep a little distance. I don’t want to know them too well…”
