SAFE BET: There’s safety in numbers for Luxottica, the Italian luxury eyewear producer and distributor, which is investing one million euros, or $1.28 million at current exchange, in safety training for its staff this year. Since 2007 when the company challenged its “surface treatment” employees in Agordo, Italy, to go 103 days without accidents on the job, Luxottica has consistently lowered the number of work-related accidents at its plants, obtaining Iso 14000 certification in 2010. Luxottica’s new mascot, Teo — an animated box wearing a helmet and boots whose name was chosen through an employee poll — keeps count of the number of days without accidents.
