ARM CANDY: Despite bearing bizarre Chinese slogans like "Smile, promise, protect the environment," these snappy rubber bracelets have made frequent appearances at events and parties around Beijing. The five multi-color athletic bands were given away to attendees of the Opening Ceremonies.
Scoring tickets priced as high as 5,000 yuan, or $728, to the coveted spectacle was a major accomplishment. Fittingly, the "free" accessories have become something of a showpiece around town, trumpeting either luck in the ticket lottery, financial ability or status as a socialite with the right ties.
