GIVE THEM THE SLIP: Only former-assistant-turned-author RoseMarie Terenzio knows just how accurate her portrayal of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette is in the new memoir “Fairy Tale Interrupted.” One detail that needs no disputing is how in the weeks leading up to Kennedy’s and Bessette’s 1996 top-secret nuptials off the coast of Georgia, they used “the Nicole Miller wedding” as a cover, when they needed to discuss anything wedding-related in front of others. The code was actually cooked up by Gogo Ferguson, a friend of Miller’s and Kennedy’s whose family has called Cumberland Island home for six generations. When ironing out arrangements for the catering, lodging and ceremony, Ferguson told people it was for Nicole Miller’s wedding. In addition to planning the festivities, Ferguson, a jewelry designer, also made the couple’s wedding bands.
Reached by phone Monday, Miller said,“They used me as the ruse even though I was already married.”
Even though Miller and Kennedy lived nearby in Tribeca, the designer never called him on the joke. “Once when we were in the voting line [in the neighborhood precinct], I thought about running over to say something. But Robert De Niro was there and I was talking to him,” Miller said.
Another tale in Terenzio’s book that fashion types might find interesting is how Bessette allegedly told her how she barely got into the ivory slip dress Narciso Rodriguez designed for her. A fast-thinking friend suggested placing a silk scarf over her head to shimmy into the dress, according to the book.
