RODARTE OVERTURE: Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy are no strangers to costumes — they created the memorable looks for Natalie Portman’s ballerina turn in “Black Swan” — and come this spring, they are continuing to stretch their creativity in that direction. The Mulleavys will create the costumes for the Los Angeles Philarmonic’s production of “Don Giovanni” in May. It will be directed by Christopher Alden with a set by Frank Gehry, who also created the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown L.A. where the performances will take place.
“Opera has always been a part of us; our grandmother was from Rome and studied it as a young girl,” the duo jointly stated. “To be a part of the legacy of ‘Don Giovanni’ is an amazing opportunity. Working with Frank Gehry in the concert hall that he designed, alongside [conductor] Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is a dream.”
