Ritz Hotel Plots Renovation

French construction firm Bouygues details renovations due to be unveiled in 2014.

RITZ REDUX: A summer restaurant with a sliding roof, additional suites and a ballroom extension are just some of the improvements in store when the Ritz hotel in Paris reopens in 2014 after extensive renovations.

Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, detailed the plans after revealing it had won the tender for the refurbishment of the Place Vendôme hotel, which is due to close this summer for 27 months. Bouygues stated the refurbishment would cost around 140 million euros, or $183 million at current exchange. Didier Beautemps, head of architecture firm Atelier COS, and interior designer Thierry W. Despont will coordinate the project.

The Paris hotel scene is undergoing a major shake-up following the arrival of newcomers including the Mandarin Oriental and the Shangri-La, which have increased competition for luxury clients, forcing older establishments like the Ritz and the Hôtel Crillon to launch costly renovations.
