Rick Santorum Style: Candidate Launches Sweater Vest Initiative

The Republican presidential hopeful is cashing in on his preppy sartorial style.

SANTORUM STYLE: Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu, Diane von FurstenbergRick Santorum? The Republican presidential candidate may not have the big-name fashion designers lined up behind him that President Obama does for the 2012 campaign, but Santorum is cashing in on his preppy sartorial style with a gray sweater vest available on his Web site to supporters who donate $100 or more to his campaign.

Santorum wasted no time in promoting the vests, unveiling one as a gift to Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday night. “This is the attire of the campaign,” Santorum said to Hannity. “We’ve heard from several retailers that sweater vest sales have gone up since I started displaying the sweater vest.”

Hannity quipped that Santorum should be careful or Bain Capital might try to swoop in, a jab at rival Mitt Romney, who has had to defend his tenure at the investment firm against charges that it bought and sold companies that led to significant layoffs while he and his partners made millions. “This is not a business venture,” Santorum responded.

Donors have until today to make the $100 contribution to Santorum and receive a sweater vest, but it will take four to six weeks to deliver, the campaign said on the Web site.

“Perfect for demonstrating solidarity with true conservatives, this vest is a great way to show your support for Rick,” the slogan on his site says. “It’s 100 [percent] cotton, made in the USA, comes in gray, and is yours for your contribution of $100 or more. Don’t let sleeves slow you down — donate today!”

He shouldn’t give up the day job, though.
