Front Row at Preen Spring 2012

Marisa Tomei chatted with WWD about her latest project, George Clooney’s “The Ides of March,” and red carpet fashion.

RED-CARPET PREENING: Having recently made the red-carpet rounds at the Venice Film Festival for George Clooney’s “The Ides of March,” Marisa Tomei doesn’t think all those step-and-repeats overshadow the acting. “In Venice in particular, the festival is low-key enough. But maybe [that’s true] at awards shows. Those are a little nuts,” she said before Monday’s Preen show at the IAC Building.

“I almost think the events that celebrate the craft of acting have been taken over by fashion. But it’s always fun to dress up,” the 46-year-old actress said.

But then again Hollywood has long been bound to fashion. “It’s always been that way,” offered her boyfriend, Logan Marshall-Green.

One thing that has changed is leading actors’ interest in multitasking. Clooney wrote, directed and headlines “The Ides of March” with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti and Ryan Gosling. As for what it’s like to have Clooney call the shots, Tomei said, “It was great. He’s an actor, so he knows what it feels like. He knows the ups and downs.”
