CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: “Budrus,” the story of a successful non-violent protest in the West Bank, walked off with 2012 Puma Creative Impact award at a ceremony in Berlin on Tuesday night. This annual award — valued at 50,000 euros, or $63,745 at current exchange rates — was created by Puma to identify and honor the documentary film that has made the most significant positive social or environmental impact. The film “Gasland” won a jury commendation.
“We started Puma Vision with the idea that we needed to promote some of the work we had been doing in the areas of social and environmental issues, global peace and Puma creative (promoting artists and creative organizations). We found that documentaries are a fantastic catalyst to get the message across,” said Puma chief executive Franz Koch.
The German sportswear giant started to work with the BritDoc Foundation about three years ago, he explained. This is the second time the award has been presented.
Describing “Budrus,” actor and activist Djimon Hounsou said, “This brave film shows how non-violence in the face of insurmountable opposition can succeed and can continue to inspire peacemakers on both sides.”
The other top 2012 nominees were the documentary films “Armadillo,” “Bag It” and “Weapon of War.” The independent jury included actor Danny Glover; director Mira Nair; writer Jemina Khan, and executive director of Greenpeace International, Kumi Naidoo.
