PRINCESS CUT: Ten of Princess Diana’s best known dresses are set to be auctioned in London on March 19. The gowns were originally sold at a charity auction in June 1997 at the request of the Princess just months before her death.
Among the dresses by designers including Bruce Oldfield, Catherine Walker and Zandra Rhodes is the midnight blue velvet gown by Victor Edelstein that she wore to the State Dinner at the White House for a dinner given in honor of the Prince and Princess of Wales by President and First Lady Nancy Reagan in November 1985.
According to lore, Diana is said to have told the First Lady that her one wish on her American trip was to dance with John Travolta, which the First Lady arranged. Diana and Travolta spent over 20 minutes together on the dance floor, dancing to songs including “You Should Be Dancing” from “Saturday Night Fever”.
The dresses will be auctioned by Kerry Taylor Auctions and estimates range from 20,000 to 200,000 pounds ($30,900 to $309,000 at current exchange).
