ANIMAL INSTINCTS: Prince William and David Beckham made a joint call to protect endangered wildlife on Monday, launching a campaign called #WhoseSideAreYouOn in London. The prince is president of United for Wildlife, an umbrella for seven conservation organizations that raises awareness, and the campaign aims to harness the power of sport and social media to stop illegal killing and support preservation.
“Around the world, the illegal wildlife trade is responsible for the slaughter of tens of thousands of animals a year, pushing some of our most beloved species to the brink of extinction,” said William. “Our children should not live in a world without elephants, tigers, lions and rhinos. Enough is enough. It is time to choose between critically endangered species and the criminals who kill them for money.”
During the event, which took place at Google Town Hall in central London, the prince and Beckham revealed the campaign’s first group of global ambassadors whose job will be to raise awareness through sports and other events. They include Prince Harry, Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton, Francois Pienaar, Rahul Dravid, Yao Ming, Sir Matthew Pinsent, Hans Sarpei, and The Leicester Tigers rugby team.
Supporters can join the campaign via Facebook, Twitter or Google+ by subscribing to the United for Wildlife You Tube channel, or by visiting the website unitedforwildlife.org. They are also being urged to watch - or participate in - United for Wildlife sports events, according to campaign’s organizers.
