A PRIMARK PROMISE: Primark, which has pledged to give short-term aid to the victims of the Rana Plaza building collapse, said it would complete the registration of close to 4,000 former employees or their dependents of the complex over the next few days. “This registration process is needed to enable the secure payment of short-term financial aid, the equivalent of three months’ wages, to all the Rana Plaza employees,” the company said in a statement. “The vast majority of these employees made clothes for retail brands other than Primark.”

As reported, one of Primark’s suppliers occupied the second floor of the eight-story building, which collapsed in April, killing 1,129 garment workers and injuring more than 2,000. Primark’s statement said the short-term assistance “recognizes that the process to establish long-term compensation will take time…and that individuals considered to be vulnerable are supported appropriately.”

Primark said that it has so far committed some $1 million to its food distribution program and to short-term financial support for the victims and their families.
