PRESSING ON: J. Press is parting ways with consulting creative directors Ariel and Shimon Ovadia, who have been designing collections under the J. Press York Street moniker for the past four seasons. On Monday, J. Press said the split with the designers was due to the expansion of its brand to international locations, and the need to consolidate both in-house design teams in New York and Tokyo. “Looking back over the past four seasons, we couldn’t have asked for better partners than Ariel and Shimon,” said Yuki Okita, the company’s chief executive officer.
Under the direction of the Ovadia brothers, the Ivy League-inspired York Street line, which included classic suits, preppy-striped ties and oxford shirts, among others, was carried in more than 50 stores. “It’s only positive. We were able to successfully deliver what they hired us to do, building the foundation — and now they are taking it and pushing it forward,” said Shimon Ovadia. “We love the brand and it’s one of those things you’re sad to see it go but you’ve seen it become successful.”
The brothers said they will now focus full time on their own business and have opened an office in Tokyo.
