SWEET SIXTEEN: Presented for the sixteenth time this season, the Premium Young Designers Award feted an international trio of aspiring young talents Monday afternoon before Berlin Fashion Week kicked off.
The prize’s young designer start-up package includes a free stand at the next Premium trade show in January 2014, inclusion in all the fair’s communications materials, a select buy of their collections at Premium’s concept store F95, as well as exposure in the windows of Berlin’s Galeries Lafayette as part of the Premium Young Talents showcase.
The German capital’s Franziska Michael, who founded her label in 2010 directly after graduating from Esmod in Berlin, took the women’s wear prize. Her upcoming collection plays with tennis references from the Nineties and other youthful memories. Milan’s Andreas Buglione won the men’s wear prize for his print-intensive Tothem collection, which he said tries to give the cyber-gentleman a dash of punk.
With her contemporary one-of-a-kind medicine-bag interpretations, handcrafted from vintage leather, precious metals and containing semi-precious stones with purported strength, energy or healing properties, California native Kira Lillie’s VK Lillie collection won in the accessories category.
Lillie’s latest line was not only inspired by but has also been made in Berlin, where she’s been spending the last months.
“I’m quite a traveler and love to analyze people and cities. Each has a particular energy, and my jewelry is like that,” she told WWD. The Berlin capsule — or pop-up collection, as she termed it — “is pretty intense, a bit gothic, with lots of metalics mixed with rock crystal. Berlin is a pretty extreme city. You can lay low and have a tranquil life or party for days. And it’s a humane city, where people of all sorts accept each other.”
